Listed — Mike Weis
Percussionist Mike Weis lives in Chicago, and if you don’t live there, too, there’s a good chance you’ve never had a chance to see him play. Weis’ diverse ensembles — Zelienople, Good Stuff House, Kwaidan, and a duo with guitarist Souled American — touch on a multitude of styles and methods, from downbeat songcraft to rustic Americana to genre-free improvisation. But they’re united in their preference for playing close to home. Since 2011, Weis has released two solo albums that use sound to establish a constructed sense of home that encompasses the clatter of industry, the songs of local birds, and liturgical music of Korea, the ancestral birthplace of part of his family.
